Episode Transcription

Kim Sutton Welcome back to another episode of positive productivity. On the day that this episode is released, I will be at the new media summit in San Diego. However, I’m batch recording a whole bunch of episodes before I go so that I can keep providing value and a little bit of insight as to what I’m thinking about during this whole process of entrepreneurship and speaking and traveling to events with you. So I hope you enjoy. Now before I get into the meat of today’s episode, I would love to invite you to please leave a rating and review of the podcast on iTunes or your preferred listening platform. Now if you don’t know it already, rating and reviewing your favorite podcasts allow for them to gain visibility. And I, as well as so many other podcasters so much appreciate, so much appreciate, appreciate so much, positive productivity is not about perfection, appreciate so much your feedback, because it lets us know that you’re listening. So if I can ask you just to take two minutes out of your day, and head over to your favorite platform, I would so appreciate it. Anyway, getting back to the substance of today’s episode. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking since I went to the new media summit in September of 2017, particularly about what I wore to that event, how I did my hair, what I look like. And I know you might be thinking that I’m being over critical. But looking back at that event, I realized I was trying to be somebody who I was not. I’ve already said it once in this episode, and I say it in just about every single episode, but positive productivity is not about perfection. And if I’m going to events to try to be a perfect version of myself, then what I’m actually doing is not being myself at all. Looking back at the pictures from the fall event, I was not wearing clothes that I was necessarily comfortable in. I was wearing what I thought other people would expect of me. I was doing my hair, oh my gosh, I don’t know what I was doing with my hair. But I realized while preparing for this event that I need to be myself. As you’re building your business and going out and meeting new people, I want to encourage you to always go as your most authentic self possible. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you can wear the clothes that you’re wearing, day in and day out at your house. Hey, I know that I can’t go in my thing one and thing two pajama pants. However, that doesn’t mean that I need to go out and buy glamorous new gowns or outfits that will just make me feel like I’m outside of my own skin. I am so excited about going to this session of the new media summit because I feel like this time I am going as myself. For the first three to four years after I started my business in 2012, I felt the constant need to pretend I was somebody I was not. I rarely posted on social media because I didn’t want to share struggles or stripes that I was facing or that my business was facing. But when the Positive Productivity Podcast was launched in 2016, I started sharing the truth. In the truth getting out allowed me to connect with so many more people than I could have possibly imagined. By being honest about everything, the good and the bad in my business and also in my personal life. I was able to connect not only via the airwaves, sound waves, but also emotionally with so many more people. If I revert to that way of thinking, to the way of thinking that I need to dress a certain way and look a certain way, then I’m no better than I was between 2012 and 2016. I can’t say that everything is better. But I know that I have gone through so much personal and professional development since then, that I should no longer be stuck in the mindset that I need to be living up to other people’s expectations. Nobody at that event or any other event expects me to be anybody but who I actually am. And the same should always be true for you. Don’t put yourself out there trying to live up to other people’s expectations. Be yourself. Show your true colors and let your greatness shine bright. Now with all this said, go forth and make it a positive and productive day.
