Episode Transcription

Kim Sutton In full disclosure, I do not typically do much research before I record my solo episodes, because in most cases, I am hit by inspiration, and I simply turn on my microphone and start recording. However, today’s episode required a little bit of research just to make sure I’m not making a complete idiot out of myself. And that research was in fact on gray hair. If you can relate to anything that I’m about to share with you, I would love to hear your feedback. And you can leave that in the comments section at thekimsutton.com/pp285. I have found in the recent months that just about every single time I wash and dry my hair, I have a new, bright shiny gray or silver hair sticking out of one side of my head and basically shouting right in my face. I’m here. I’m here. What are you gonna do about me? Well, I don’t take the gray hairs out, I have joked with my husband and also with my kids, that I’ve earned every single one of those gray hairs. And I think effective today, I’m either going to call them silver hairs or platinum hairs just to make them sound a little bit more appealing. The funniest thing about these gray hairs though, is that I’ve noticed that they are stronger and thicker than any of the rest of the hair on my head. Now I am somewhere between dark blonde and light brown haired. I don’t know what the proper way to say that is. Maybe I should say, I have light brown or dark blonde hair. But these silver, platinum, whatever you want to call them hairs are three or four times is thick and they do not want to move when I tell them to. They don’t want to hide themselves. They don’t want to talk behind my ear. They just want to stick out and say hello. Look at me, look at me. When I was arguing with one however, in front of the mirror the other day I realized wow. You know the struggles that got me to where I am today have made me tremendously stronger. Every single struggle that I’ve been through and have overcome makes me just that much more prepared to handle and overcome the next struggle that comes my way. So amusingly, the fact that these silver hairs are so much stronger than the rest makes me feel like they are a badge of honor for everything that I have gotten through. Now if you’re wondering what the research was that I did before today’s episode, I was actually wondering if gray hair can be caused by struggles or stress. And what I found was that gray hair is primarily the result of genetics. However, stress can speed up the grain or waiting, waiting? Maybe that’s the right word, maybe it’s not, process. There are a variety of other factors, which can also make our hair thin or make us bald, hopefully not for women, or can make our hair white or gray. But stress has been linked to be a contributing factor if you are showing grays or whites prematurely. If you’re like me, however, I don’t want you to look at the gray hairs or the silver hairs as an inconvenience or as a reason to go to get your hair dyed. If yours are like mine, they are stronger than every single other hair on your head and you are stronger as a result of the struggles and the adversity that you have made it through. Give yourself a big pat on the back and let you know that even if you don’t have a medal around your neck, you now have a few strands of medal coming out of the top of your head. Now with all that said, go forth and make it a positive and productive day.
