Staying Grounded in God When Your Business Feels Like Too Much

There was a morning, not long after I started rebuilding my life from scratch, when everything went wrong at the same time. Maybe you have had one of these mornings? For me, they are the kind that paralyze me, and make me look up, asking, “Seriously?! Are you going to do anything!? I’m doing the best I can!“

My computer froze mid-project, my inbox had 47 critical unread messages before 8 a.m., and a deadline I thought was the following week was actually the next day. To top it all off, underneath all the chaos was a whisper, telling me: “You’re not cut out for this. You never were.”

That whisper wasn’t new. It had followed me through years of a toxic relationship, a relationship that had slowly convinced me I was too much and never enough, all at once. Now, standing at the edge of something new – a business, a mission, and a life I was re-building ground zero – the whisper was doing its best to knock me off my feet. Again.

What I needed in that moment wasn’t a better productivity system, a cleaner inbox, or a color-coded calendar. What I needed was to get grounded, not in routines or strategies, but in God.

When Your Foundation Shifts, What Are You Standing On?

Building a business after a toxic relationship is unlike any other entrepreneurial experience. You’re not just learning to run a business… You’re simultaneously unlearning the lies that were spoken over you, rebuilding your self-trust, and figuring out what your voice sounds like when no one is trying to silence it.

It’s a lot. On the hard days, when nothing goes right and the overwhelm sets in, the temptation is to either push harder or collapse entirely.

Isaiah 40:29-31 offers us a different way:

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.“

Renewal, real renewal, doesn’t come from grinding harder. It comes from waiting on the Lord, and from returning to Him as your foundation when the ground beneath your business feels shaky.

That’s what staying grounded actually means for the Christian woman in business: not keeping it together through sheer willpower, but continually returning to the One who holds it all together.

The Lie That Keeps You Reactive

One of the most lasting effects of a toxic relationship is a nervous system that never fully powers down. You were trained – by chaos, by criticism, and by walking on eggshells – to stay in a constant state of alert.

That hyper-vigilance doesn’t disappear just because you’ve left the relationship. It follows you into your business, into your inbox, into your client calls, and into the moments when a project doesn’t go as planned and your brain immediately jumps to worst-case scenario.

Staying grounded doesn’t mean pretending those reactions don’t happen. It means having something to return to when they do.

Jesus said it plainly in John 15:5:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.“

Notice He didn’t say some things. He said nothing. Not because you’re incapable, but because your truest fruitfulness – your best work, your clearest vision, and your most grounded decisions – flows from your connection to Him. When you’re disconnected from Him, even the smallest obstacle can feel insurmountable. When you’re rooted in Him, you have access to a steadiness that isn’t manufactured.

That’s the grounding every woman rebuilding her business actually needs.

What Grounding Looks Like in Practice

I want – and need – to be honest with you: even I don’t always get grounding right. There are still mornings when I’m three tasks deep before I’ve even said good morning to God. And there are still moments when I catch myself white-knuckling a problem instead of taking it to Him.

Over time, though, I’ve learned that the most productive thing I can do for my business – and for my peace of mind – is to build my day around staying connected. Here’s what that has looked like for me:

Start before the work starts.

Even ten minutes in the Word before I open my laptop changes the entire tone of my day. This isn’t because I’ve completed a religious “duty,” but because I’ve reminded myself Who I belong to and Who is ultimately in charge of this thing I’m building.

Notice when you’ve disconnected.

Sometimes I’ll catch myself in a spiral, overthinking an email, catastrophizing a slow week, or comparing my progress to someone else’s highlight reel. My best friend calls this “rehearsing a disaster.” Over time, I’ve come to recognize it as a sign I’ve drifted.  The drifting is not a failure. It’s information, and it’s an invitation to come back.

Give your overwhelm language.

One of the most powerful grounding practices I know is prayer. It’s not polished or formal, but it’s completely honest. “Lord, I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m tired. I need You.” That is enough. He already knows what’s going on in your life. He just wants you to come to Him with it.

Rest without guilt.

Philippians 4:13 is often quoted as a hustle verse: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” But the context is actually about contentment in every circumstance, including seasons of having very little.

Staying grounded sometimes… often… means honoring the limits of your humanity, not pushing past them. Rest is not laziness. Rest is wisdom.

You Are Not the Sole Sustainer of This Business

Here is something I had to learn the hard way: the pressure I felt to do everything, hold everything, fix everything, and never show weakness wasn’t entrepreneurial drive. It was the trauma talking.

Women who have survived toxic relationships often become over-functioners. We learned that if we didn’t hold it all together, everything would fall apart, or worse, we’d be punished for the pieces that slipped. So we carry far more than we were ever meant to carry, and we do it quietly, because that’s what survival required.

But that’s not how God designed you to build.

Nehemiah 8:10 says, “the joy of the Lord is your strength.” It doesn’t say your strength comes from your own determination or your productivity hacks. It says it comes from His joy, and His strength. That distinction matters because it means you are not carrying this alone, and you were never supposed to.

You get to lay things down, and you get to ask for help. You get to close the laptop and trust that God is still working while you rest. The business He’s called you to build does not depend on you running yourself into the ground.

staying grounded as a Christian woman in business - breathe

A Grounding Practice When Things Feel Out of Control

When overwhelm hits – and it will – here is a simple practice to return to your foundation:

  1. Stop. Literally pause whatever you’re doing.
  2. Breathe. Take three slow, intentional breaths. This signals your nervous system that you are safe.
  3. Speak truth. Out loud or in your heart: I am held. God is in control. I don’t have to figure everything out right now.
  4. Open your hands. Physically or symbolically — release your grip on the outcome.
  5. Ask. Pray one honest sentence to God about what you’re feeling. Just one.

This practice won’t fix everything. But it will interrupt the spiral long enough for you to remember who you actually are and who you’re actually working for.

You Are Building Something Real

If you are a woman who has walked through something difficult and is now, somehow, trying to build a business out of the rubble, that is not reckless. That is brave.

God does not waste the hard seasons. He redeems them. The very things that broke you open are often the things that make your work matter to someone else who is still in the middle of it.

Your business doesn’t need you to be unshakeable. It needs you to stay connected to the One who is.

So when the inbox is a disaster and the deadline is tomorrow and that old whisper comes back around, take a breath and return to your anchor.

He’s there. He was always there. And He is more than enough to ground you.
