Choose Your Doctors Wisely: Vetting The Right People To Support Us

Like our team members and our significant others, the people we have to support physically and medically should be in it for us and not about the money. They shouldn’t want to see us in and out, “Thank you, mam.” This is exactly the type of experience I am looking for now. When I need a new doctor, I want a doctor like this one. When I get a team member, I don’t want them to be rushing through my work to get it done. I want them to love it and think about ways that they can make it better.

In Episode 705, I talked about how we need to take responsibility for our mental health, take the Band-Aid off of situations in our personal, professional life and health life, and look for underlying causes instead of looking at the symptoms. I shared how I had wound up in the mental hospital. I have shared that a few times on the show. I never want to hide it because if you are going through anxiety, depression or other mental, emotional situations, I don’t want to say conditions or illnesses. I don’t know what the politically correct expression is. If you’re struggling emotionally, I don’t want you to ever feel ashamed or embarrassed. If you should wind up going to a mental health facility, I’m not ashamed. I can create content off of it now.

I also shared that I didn’t agree with my doctors. I want to talk to you about our rights and our responsibility to choose our doctors. If you haven’t been reading to any of my series so far in 2021 or you are reading well into the future, the whole series, which started with Episode 705 and will go through episode 708, we are talking about physical health. The reason why we are talking about physical health is that when our physical health is struggling, it’s likely that our business may be struggling as well. It’s our responsibility to hire and fire responsibly in our businesses and when it comes to our health.

It goes way back to 2010 or 2011, maybe a little bit later. I don’t even remember my primary care physician left the practice she was at. I was assigned by my insurance a new primary care physician. Admittedly, I never visited that physician. I was relatively turned off, as I am sure a lot of people are, by the rush-rush attitude of that office. I would go in and I would be there for 45 minutes waiting to see the doctor for 5, 10 minutes. The doctor would ask me what my symptoms are, treat the symptoms without looking for the cause and send me on my way so that they could get onto the next patient. Throughout my journey on the show, I have been talking to so many great guests who have talked about their holistic health experiences but when it came time for me to find a new primary care physician in 2018, I had never even considered looking outside of my “norm.”

I didn’t ask my insurance company for a holistic health practitioner. I don’t even know if they do that. I just asked them to assign me a new doctor and they did. I don’t remember what drove me to the doctor in 2018 besides my car. I remember only having about an hour blocked out in my calendar. This was including the twenty-minute drive each way to get there. Dear friend, if this is your first time reading, I’m not in New York or a major Metropolitan area. When I say fifteen minutes, I mean fifteen minutes including lights and traffic. I thought it would be out of my office for an hour. The doctor came in, sat down and said, “Tell me about yourself.”

I remember being so taken aback that I jerked my head back and I said, “What?” I remember my eyes were shut and I was shaking my head out of disbelief because I had not encountered this before. When I opened my eyes, the doctor looked at me and he said, “I like to know who my patients are. I like to be able to treat from the cause up and help you to live a more optimal life.” I was blown away. I was there for an hour. I don’t even remember what for. When I went back a year and a half later because I was struggling with anxiety, this is at the end of 2019, the doctor once again, blew me away. I went in asking for anxiety medication instead, I walked out with a prescription to exercise 30 minutes a day. I am not joking. Like our team members and our significant others, the people we have to support us physically and medically should be in it for us and not about the money. They shouldn’t want to see us in and out, “Thank you, ma’am.”

POPR 706 | Choose Doctors

Choose Doctors: Like it’s our responsibility to hire and fire responsibly in our businesses, it’s also our responsibility to hire and fire responsibly when it comes to our health.

This is exactly the type of experience I am looking for now. When I need a new doctor, I want a doctor like this one. When I get a team member, I don’t want them to be rushing through my work to get it done. I want them to love it and think about ways that they can make it better. I want them to suggest ways that even I can improve. I want my husband, Dave, to challenge me when he sees me goofing off of my phone playing Merge Dragons!. I may talk about positive productivity but I still have my quirks. I want him to challenge me, “Is this what you want to be doing now?”

How many hours have you lost to things like that? I know this isn’t related to physical health or maybe it is rather than being sucked into the television, Netflix or whatever you are doing. Is there something that you could be doing for your physical health? Trust me. I am guilty of not addressing my physical health needs. I eat horribly. I’m being honest. I don’t like to exercise. If you can hold me accountable for getting my physical health in order, I don’t know what I will do, but I will work out something for you and I would appreciate it. I’m asking for you, my reader. Help me get my physical health in line. How can you do that? Head on over to the TheKimSutton.com/pp706. Let me know that you read this episode and tell me that you are going to keep me accountable.

I will be forever grateful. I will do something for you. I want you to think about how you can choose your medical professionals wisely. I want you to let it bleed, no pun intended out until all the other people that you associate within your life, your friends, your significant others, your team members, even your clients. How can you choose them more wisely so that you can be less stressed and live a more optimal life? Think about that, will you? I hope you have enjoyed this episode. With all this said, go forth and make it a positive and productive day.
